間違えやすい２つの単語

1. effect とaffect

effectは基本的に名詞、affectは動詞です。

effectはある物から受ける、効果、や影響そのものですが、

それに対して

Affect somethingと言うと、somethingに何らかの影響を与えるという意味になります。

Nicotine affects your health really badly.

Effects of nicotine are well known now. It can cause cancer.

What kinds of side effects does this medicine cause?
(side effects : 副作用)

The Russia-Ukraine conflict is sure to affect Japan-Russia relations and make it difficult to resolve the issue of the northern territories.

2. imageとimagine

これもeffectとaffectと同様です。

imageは基本的に名詞、imagineは動詞です。

ただし、imageを日本語のイメージと同じように考えるのは止めましょう。

日本語のイメージは頭の中に描く映像のようなものですが、

imageはそれだけではなく、鏡に映る姿や、カメラ、写真に写る映像、

など実態を伴わない映像そのものを言う場合も多いです。

imagine something　と言うとsomethingを想像するという意味になりますね。
