クレームとclaimの違い

Customers sometimes claim to me.
これは日本人英語ですね。

claimがなんとも不自然です。

claimに日本語の言うクレームと言う意味はありません。

claimは
ある物が自分のものであるという当然の権利を主張する場合に使います。

Japan claims the Northern Islands off Hokkaido.
No one claims the million yen found on the street.

空港で、手荷物受取所をbaggage claimと言うのも、ここからきていますね。

あるいはあるたとえ信じる人が少なくても事柄が真実であることを主張する場合に使います。

Jenny claims that she’s seen a ghost.
The cabinet minister claims that he had no knowledge of any wrongdoing.

また、claimが名詞であったとしても、当然の権利としての要求を言います。

ですから、保険の補償などを言う場合にも使います。

When your car is damaged, you can make a claim on the insurance.
ですから、claimは使いこなすのが少し難しい単語です。

文句を言う、苦情を言う、そういう意味ではcomplainを使うのが普通です。

ですから、Customers sometimes complain to me (about…).

と言うほうが自然ですね。
